Is it Pop or Soda?
There are mixed reviews on whether or not this part of Florida is Southern. Everyone has an opinion. In the short amount of time here I have met all kinds of people. I decided I'd listen and see if "they" say pop or soda. These photos are from the same "Southern" central FL town as the photos in my last post. This shop owner says Soda. What do you say and where did you grow up?
Y'all know I love tea, but I do drink coffee and really like visiting coffee houses. This little coffee house is actually down an alley way. Look for it if you go to Mount Dora. See the restaurant next door? I hear it's one of the best in town. It's called the Goblin Market.

I've been through Mt. Dora before, but I never spent much time there. It's a beautiful little town! And I say "soda" now, although I grew up saying "pop".
Those look like some really neat places to visit. Maybe hubby and I will get to check them out someday.
We say pop here in Ohio. At least my family does.
The places you show have a warm welcoming look to them.Soda or Pop,I''ll have a coffee any time. :)
Blessings,Ruth
I grew up calling it pop in Kentucky.
I grew up in NJ calling it soda. I've lived in the south though-Tennesee and Virginia and I've heard both there. I worked in a small town in Tennessee and also heard it referred to as dope...as in, I'll have a big orange dope. I had to ask my husband what that meant. He's from TN.
Growing up in NY, I always call it soda. I lived in Florida for several years and everyone there called it pop. To me pop is my dad or a loud noise; lol.
Blessings,
Debbie
As you may recall, I grew up in Arkansas and any kind of carbonated beverage, we always referred to as "Coke". Now, my best friend was from MN. and she called Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc. a "pop".
I'm laughing because we just had this discussion with a lady when we were in Chicago last weekend. To us, it's all Coke! Unless it's Dr. Pepper, of course.
I grew up in north Florida saying 'coke.' Coke meant every kind of carbonated beverage available. As in "Would you like a coke? What kind?" When I was 16 we moved to Michigan and I confused everyone by calling soft drinks 'coke.' I learned to say 'soda' like the natives. Now I live in the Ozarks and I still say 'soda' (like everyone else around here).
Since this post was about drinking something and you used the phrase
"the last two shots..." as I skimmed over I thought this was going somewhere entirely different. I'm glad to see the undercover drinking you do is coffee, not something else. ;)
Do you know when I first got to Denver, Mission Hills sent me out for sodas and I couldn't find them at the grocery store. I searched and searched for them. They were under the sign "pop". I was SO lost. I am from the south and have always called fizzy stuff "sodas." All my friends from Georgia call it coke. Ironically, I won't touch a pepsi with a 10 foot pole.
I can only imagine just how much fun this would be to enjoy a quiet evening with friends with a cup of coffee and watching whatever happens on by.
Love and Hugs ~ Kat
Where I grew up, we say soft drinks. If you asks for soda or pop, most people there won't have any idea what it is..
It was nice meeting you, today. I am so pleased that you dropped by.
I know you will love St. Augustine. It's such a lovely place.
I love your photos of Mt Dora. Do you live in the area? get up there fairly often...
My sister owns a shop in Mt Dora...Julianne's Coastal Cottage. Her SIL is the manager. Hope you visited. (There are photos of the shop and of the area in the older posts of my blog.)
As far as soda vs pop...I am a NATIVE Floridian. We grew up saying "soft drink" or just plain "COKE" or "Co'Cola" (even if we wanted a Sprite). When we moved to PA, my neighbor called to ask for some soda...and I sent her baking soda. I was teased for years!!!
See you soon...
Jane (artfully graced)
Well, you know I'm from Michigan and we say "pop." Here a "soda" is carbonated water mixed with ice cream for a yummy treat. Although, you will see signs advertising "soft drinks" "soda pop" and "pop."
What a cute little town. I love the Goblin Market, too cute.
I am from the NW so we say pop for sure.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a little note. So glad you came by!
Hi Shelly! When I was young we called it pop. Now that I'm all grown up and all (lol) we call it soda! I think in my in-between-years I called it soda-pop!
Thanks for coming to my blog! And thanks for the great "cookie" sign idea! I'm going to paint it!
~Blessings, Heidi
OH! That looks like a wonderful place to visit!
Where I'm from, it's all Cokes. No matter if its coke, pepsi, orange crush , etc. LOL!
Stop by my place if you can. Would love to have you visit. And be sure to enter the giveaway!

Hi Shelley! Born and raised Florida sunshine gal and it is soda to me! Pop is a northern/midwest term isn't it?
Mt. Dora is awesome! One of my fave places, and so is St. Augustine!!

Do you have any free time next week? Maybe on Tuesday afternoon? I am SO looking forward to meeting you, and SO sorry I haven't been able to make it happen sooner!!

Hi Shelley,
I lived in central Michigan most of my life, now in the Metro Detroit area and we say 'pop'.
Welcome to your new home in Florida. Years ago we visited St. Augustine. I loved how very Souther and beautiful it was there.
My favorite Aunt and my 'other Mother' were from the south and had a huge impact in my life so I often say I was raised in the north but am Southern by nature.
Thank you for visiting my blog, it is very nice to meet you.
Hugs,
Sue
Those places look great. So quaint and comfortable. I hope everything is going well with the possible buyer of your home, I can imagine how stressful moving is without that complication.
Some of the places you showed remind me of our favorite vacation place--Lakeside, OH.
Right now, I can't think of which I say--soda or pop. I usually say Coke or Pepsi.
I have always heard the further south in Florida you go, the less southern it is! Honestly, most southern follks don't use soda or pop but just "I will take a Coke, please!" Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper....it's all Coke! LOL
Thanks for coming by Southern Somedays!!!
I say soda but don't some people call it soda pop? I love your occupation listed as mama. That is definitely more than a full time career! It has great benefits too!

It looks gorgeous! I'm so happy that you guys are settling in so great.
Give my love to the family!

We say POP out here on the west coast - I think because we're always in a hurry. Soda is two syllables - POP is one - so much quicker ;)
We call it soda in NC but my Grandfather was from NY and he called it pop. Every once in a while I'll slip up and say pop. I get weird looks when that happens. :o)
"Coke," I don't think I've ever said soda or pop...definitely, not pop!
Growing up in Arkansas and North Carolina, our fridge was never with out a Pepsi, but Momma always called any soft drink Coke. Confusing? She hates Coca-Cola! She still has a Pepsi in her hand at all times!
Thanks for the pictures of Mount Dora. I've never been and I think I need to. Shelley, you and I might just be kindred spirits!
